CARDI cross-border seminar series - Older People and the Recession
Thursday 9th and 10th December 2010, Galway This event will focus on ageing in rural Ireland – north and south and examine crucial issues of concern for researchers, policymakers and older people themselves about the impact of the recession. It will feature contributions from experts (both Nationally and Internationally) in the field of research, policy and practice and showcase findings from CARDI funded research projects.

The International Centre for Local and Regional Development (ICLRD) is delighted to announce the publication of their latest study, All Change But Any Alignment? The Impact of the Proposed Governance and Planning Reforms Across the Island of Ireland on Inter-Jurisdictional Planning. Published at the end of June 2010, this report considers the implications of the proposed governance and spatial planning reforms in both jurisdictions on future collaboration. JRC - New regional competitiveness index highlights strong regional dimension
To improve the understanding of competitiveness at the regional level, the JRC's Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC), together with the Commission's Directorate-General for Regional Policy, has developed a new index to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of each of the 271 EU regions.
EPA's Environment in Focus online indicators site launched
Minister John Gormley, TD, today attended the launch of the EPA’s new Environment in Focus site. The environmental indicators’ website was launched at the annual Environment Ireland conference being held today in the Croke Park Convention Centre.

Launch of All Ireland Traveller Health Study Report
The study examined the health status and health needs of all Travellers living in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. In Northern Ireland, the study was assisted by a traveller support group, An Munia Tober.
Speaking at the launch of the report in Dublin, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Liz Mitchell said: "The publication of this report is a milestone. The challenge now for policy makers will be to examine the findings and the key points highlighted in the study.
Figures released for the period May - July 2010 recorded a fall in the Northern Ireland unemployment rate to 6.8%.
More recent figures for August 2010 showed an increase of 900 over the month in the number of unemployment benefit claimants.
The total number of employee jobs in Northern Ireland was estimated at 699,230 for June 2010, representing a fall of 1,120 over the quarter.
Commenting on the figures, Enterprise Minister, Arlene Foster said:
