AIRO Research Projects

The Research Projects page is dedicated to our AIRO and NUIM research partners. The idea of this section is to provide research partners with access to mapping tools and allow partners to utilise the spatial dimension within the data they hold. This can be done by developing census mapping tools for specific areas (see Western Development Commission), developing cross-border mapping tools (see Space-ial NW and ICBAN), unlocking and maximising the value stored within Department for Social Protection Live Register data (see Southside Partnership) or providing a spatial mapping tool for annual research publications (see State of the Nations Children).

European Indicators

All data available in the European Indicator Tools has been accessed from Eurostat. For more information on Eurostat please click here.

The European Countries Indicators Tools allows users to compare Ireland to the EU27 countries and Norway on a range of indicators including: Population, Education, Health ,Social Protection ,Environment and energy, Economy and Finance, External Trade, Information Society, Tourism, Agriculture and Fisheries and Transport.

European Cities Indicators Tool, gives users access to data from over 1,500 cities across Europe. This allows for comparison of a range of indicators including Population and GDP. The filter function within this module enables users to compare cities of the countries most of interest to them.

European Territories Indicators Tool provides similar information to that available in the Cities and Countries tools, however the data is available at a regional level within the E27 Countries (+Norway).

Local Partnership

Local Partnership Mapping Modules have been produced all for all Local Partnership areas (50+) within the Republic of Ireland. Data is available at electoral division level (ED) within each module.

The data used in this profile is from the Republic of Ireland 2002 and 2006 Census. The following main themes are available in the profile:

NI Census

Following the data release of the Northern Ireland Census on the 30th of January 2013, AIRO produced a series of mapping modules. These modules were produced using both Instant Atlas and Flex Viewers and contain a small sample of data released from both the CSO in the Republic of Ireland and NISRA in Northern Ireland.

A flex viewer has been produced with ten indicators including age profiles, religion and employment across the cross border area of Louth and Newry Mourne. To access the module click here.

An Instant Atlas module has also been produced for the Omagh Distict in a HTML format to allow users to use the module across a variety platforms including tablets. Indicators available within the module includes, population, religion, ethnicity, identity and languages. The HTML format gives users the control to export data and maps directly from the module.

South Tipperary

The South Tipperary Mapping Module was completed as a part of the South Tipperary County Data Hub website. Data within the mapping module is drawn from a variety of sources, including Census 2006 and 2011, Pobal HP Deprivation Indices, AIRO's All-Island Accessibility Dataset, Primary and Secondary School Enrollment data, the Live Register at Social Welfare Office Level and Social Housing Waiting Lists at Local Authority level.

Working in conjunction with the web team in South Tipperary Co Co the mapping module was embedded within their website to allow for easy access to researchers, planners policy makers and members of the public.

As an add on to the project AIRO's Data Viz team also completed a Tableau Data Dashboard. The Data Dashboard contains Census variables from all 15 themes at settlement level. This allows users to compare and contrast different statistical data for all towns and villages in South Tipperary.

SPACEial North West

In planning services in the North West Region Cross Border Area, policy and decision makers are catering not only for their respective local council areas but also for the sizable transient population who cross county boundaries each day to travel to work, to take their children to school, to attend university, to avail of health and retail functions etc. When the wider functional area is taken into account the planning of services becomes more complex, in that, we are dealing with two different jurisdictions, five different council areas (Donegal County Council, Strabane District Council, Derry City Council, Limavady District Council and Magerafelt District Council) and a potential customer base of the 387,599 persons.

Most policy decision makers and planners will agree that the availability of widespread quality baseline data over different time periods would greatly facilitate the planning and targeting of scarce resources, in a manner that would deliver essential services to cater for strong urban centres while also sustaining rural communities. General consensus would imply that the availability of such data would greatly assist local authorities, state agencies, development agencies and communities with the reviews of their different county, town plans and strategies. The purpose of such an exercise would be to bring about a more optimum distribution of services through evidence based regional planning, while targeting key vulnerable populations and also enhancing the quality of life of persons who live and work in the cross border area.

The problem is that we are dealing with an information gap, whereby data is not yet available in one central location, has not yet been captured or may not be in a format that allows for ease of comparisons within local district council areas or at a more macro scale. This project sets out to address these issues.

SPACEial North West Project Summary

This project will develop a model that will assist and inform in a long term systematic way, the planning and development of the entire North West Cross Border region, to ensure the long term sustainability of its communities by:

Presenting a clear vision or projection of urban and rural growth and decline in the NW Region Cross Border area in the future
Identifying factors that are impacting on population movements
Coordinating into one central location, datasets on essential economic, social community and cultural infrastructure that are held by individual partner agencies
Capturing, collating, analyzing and locating comparable data held by CSO and NISRA over 2000 – 2006 and post 2011
Locating funding into the North West through different EU programmes
Identifying factors that have greatly assisted and prevented optimum drawdown of this funding
Identifying areas where funding would greatly assist in sustaining communities and alleviating poverty and deprivation.
Greatly enhancing access to spatial data sets to ensure more evidence based planning
Providing comparable data for the entire North West Region Cross Border area to enable the development of joint initiatives that will benefit the entire region.
Enhancing the ability of decision and policy makers to use geographical information in making their decisions and in planning services

As part of this work the SPACEial North West team have been working with the All-Island Research Observatory to develop a beta data analysis and mapping tool for the region. This tool currently contain a wide variety of cross-border census information (2001/02) and results from ICLRD data analysis projects (All-Island Deprivation Index and AIRO Access Map).

Cross Border: ICBAN

In 1995 the Irish Central Border Area Network (ICBAN) was established as a network of councillors from the central Ireland/Northern Ireland border area with one common aim: to respond to the unique economic and social needs of the Central Border Region. The ICBAN region is an amalgamation of the following counties and districts:

Armagh City and District Council
Cavan County Council
Cookstownm District Council
Donegal County Council
Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council
Fermanagh District Council
Leitrim County Council
Monaghan Councty Council
Omagh District Council
Sligo County Council

Part-financed by the European Union's INTERREG IVA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), ICBAN are currently involved in a Data Capture Project as part of its wider Spatial Planning Initiative being taken forward for the Central Border Region.

This work involves collating relevant information, identifying and addressing information gaps and creating a legacy for accessing the data for the Central Border Region across both jurisdictions. This project proposes to develop comparable relevent datasets for both sides of the border. This will ensure that these data sets can be better utilised at local, regional and national level on a cross border basis. There is a tremendeous amount of data in the public domain, which needs to be sifted, challenges, analysed and tailored towards the needsof the Spatial Planning Initiative.

ICBAN have partnered with AIRO for the initial stages of this Data Capture Project and have developed a series of comparable cross-border census variables for the whole of the ICBAN region. This data is available at ED level in the Republic of Ireland and at Ward level in Northern Ireland. In total 62 variables are currently available under the following themes:

General Demographics (Total Population, Age Bands, Dependency Rates, Martital Status)
Housing, Travel and Transport (Cars per HHlds, Distance to Work, Mode of Travel, Mode of Transport)
Economy (Labour Force Participation, Economic Dependency, Industry of Employment)

Cross Border: The Atlas of the Island of Ireland

This mapping module is based on the output from the Atlas of the Island of Ireland. The Atlas is a collaborative venture between the All-Island Research Observatory (AIRO) and the International Centre for Local and Regional Development (ICLRD). In short, AIRO, a collaborative venture between NIRSA (National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis) and NCG (National Centre for Geocomputation) at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Dundalk Institute of Technology, and Queen’s University Belfast, produced comparable datasets and the maps.

While we have been selective in our choice of what data to map within each section some of our decisions have been made for us because of poor data interoperability between jurisdictions making the production of some maps impossible. Data interoperability concerns the extent to which datasets that have been sourced separately can be used in conjunction with each other. If two sets of data cannot be used together because they do not share common attributes, then they are said to have poor interoperability. In our case, poor data interoperability exists because while censuses in Northern Ireland and Ireland share a common legacy and appear to be quite similar, they are prepared largely independently of each other. As a result, while many of the questions asked are either directly the same or very nearly the same in wording, a substantial number of questions examine the same issue differently or there is no equivalent question.

Of the 1161 SAPS (Small Area Population Statistics) variables outputted from the 2002 census in Ireland, our analysis estimates that 32 percent of variables can be directly matched to the Northern Ireland census, 31 percent can be part-matched or reclassified so that they broadly match, and 37 percent have no equivalent. This means that over two thirds of all census variables published in the South have no direct equivalents in Northern Ireland without manipulation. For those issues where similar but different questions are asked it is important to note that caution is necessary in comparing and interpreting the resultant answers across the two areas. This is because the question can be measuring highly related but subtly different phenomena or because the choices given to respondents do not match precisely. Accordingly, a reclassification of answers might be needed in order to achieve a more meaningful correspondence.

In total 62 variables have been mapped for the Island of Ireland in 1991 and 2001/02. The variables are classed under the following headings:

General Demographics (Total Population, Age Bands, Dependency Rates, Religion, Marital Status etc)
Housing, Travel and Transport (Cars per HHlds, Distance to Work, Household Tenure and Type etc)
Economy (Labour Force Participation, Economic Dependency, Industry of Employment etc)

This mapping tool has been designed for the Cross-Border area of Ireland and is based on two seperate geographical units. The Republic of Ireland has been mapped using EDs and Northern Ireland has been mapped using Wards.

Southside Partnership

Southside Partnership Mapping Module

The overall aim of the Southside Partnership Mapping Module is to highlight the potential of mapping social inclusion data at a local level to improve decision making, planning and monitoring. To date government departments have yet to develop proper and integrated data management systems and as a result planners and researchers are unable to benefit from the detail that is held within administrative datasets.

Data available within the Southside Partnership includes the Live Register Data aggregated at an ED/EA Level.

State of the Nations Children

This is Ireland's third biennial State of the Nation's Children report. These reports, which provide the most up-to-date data on all indicators in the National Set of Child Well-Being Indicators, aim to:

· Chart the well-being of children in Ireland;

· Track changes over time;

· Benchmark progress in Ireland relative to other countries

· Highlight policy issues arising;

The State of the Nation’s Children report is presented in four sections: Socio Demographics, Children’s relationships, Children’s Outcomes, and Formal and Informal Supports. The data available in these sections is represented in two modules, the International module and the National module.

Western Development Commission

The Western Development Commission (WDC) is a statutory body that was set up to promote both social and economic development in the Western Region (Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, Galway and Clare).

The following themes are covered using Census data from 2002 ,2006 and 2011: Population, Age, Dependency Ratios, Marital Status, Nationalities, Labour Force Groupings and Economic Dependency, Industry of Employment, Education Levels, Transport, Social Classes, Households, Travellers, Disability, and Housing.

Louth CSC

Children's Services Committee Louth: Statistical Report 2012

The first Louth Children's Services Committee Statistical Report was completed this year. The aim of the report is to develop a series of pertinent indicators that can be used to outline the progression of children growing up in Louth and to chart changes over time.
