Census 2011 Update: New Northern Ireland Census 2011 Mapping Tool online here
The All-Island Research Observatory (AIRO) is a research unit and spatial data portal focused on improving evidence informed planning in Ireland.
AIRO collects, analyses and provides evidence and tools to support better planning and decision making. The key strengths behind the AIRO team are mapping, data analytics and visualisation, policy advice, research and training.
AIRO actively works to maximise the usage and benefit of publicly funded and readily available datasets in Ireland as well as highlighting the benefits of proper collection, management and dissemination of datasets across different organisations.

AIRO seeks to produce all-island, spatial datasets and specialist tools to aid their analysis and to undertake academic and applied mapping research. AIRO aims to act as a single point of access to a wide variety of spatial data and information about the various regions of Ireland. The intended audience of this site are planners, policy makers, researchers and those interested in gaining an understanding of the dynamics that are shaping the island of Ireland today.

Spatial policy in Ireland, as set out in the National Spatial Strategy (NSS), places a strong emphasis on the exploitation of complementarity, both among urban centres and between urban and rural areas, in order to achieve the ‘critical mass’ which the NSS sees as a vital prerequisite for sustainable and balanced development.

Mapping Social Inclusion
The overall aim of our research is to highlight the potential of mapping social inclusion data at a local level to improve decision making, planning and monitoring. To date government departments have yet to develop proper and integrated data management systems and as a result planners and researchers are unable to benefit from the detail that is held within administrative datasets.
